The Publix grocery store is 1.2 miles from the house. It can be a bit of a nightmare during the Saturday rental change-overs. If you do not want to deal with the crowds, there are other Publix grocery stores on the Bradenton mainland, an easy stop on your way to the island. Try the aware-winning key lime pie, Sartori cheeses, and smoked trout dip. These are always on our list when we are on the island. If you are obsessed with avocado (isn’t everyone), try this simple homemade guacamole recipe:

• 2 ripe avocados
• 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
• ¼ red onion, chopped,
• Juice from ½ lime
• ½ tomato, chopped (or mix in ¼ cup salsa)
• Salt and pepper to taste

Mash the avocado and mix in all other ingredients. Serve with corn tortilla chips.
